Yay, you’re thinking about homeschooling! I am so excited for you. It’s going to be so amazing. I say that only 1 year in, but I love it already and feel like it will only get better from here. Personally, I feel that the first year or two is truly the hardest! There are so many different homeschool curriculums out there to choose from and that seems to be the most overwhelming part. “Which one is the best?” you ask. Well here’s the answer:

There is no “best” curriculum because every child has their own learning style and needs. The best one will be the one that best fits YOUR child and their learning style. If your question is really “Which one is the best so I don’t fail my child?”, then here’s my answer to that:

Remember when your baby was just born and you knew your baby better than anyone? You are and will be (for a long time) the one person who knows your child better than anyone else! And because of that, you are the most qualified person to teach YOUR child/ren. So first, give yourself some credit. You taught them how to walk, talk, and sing their ABCs. You will learn alongside them just like you did when they were babies. You will not fail them…glad we got that out of the way. (:

Below you will find all the popular curriculums along with a summary from their website. I don’t want to sway you anyway, so I will share which one I chose at the end! (:

  • Sonlight – From the Website: “Sonlight is a literature-based homeschool curriculum. In fact, we pioneered this style of homeschool back in 1990 when we started the company. When you use Sonlight, you and your children will read many of the best children’s books available. We find this to be a great foundation for education, since reading is the basis for comprehension in most academic subjects. Kids who read often and at length develop agile critical thinking and analytical skills. Those skills help them excel in writing, math, science and more. Even if your child is a reluctant reader, many parents have used Sonlight to get their own reluctant readers hooked on reading. In the vast majority of cases, this strategy has worked quite well! (Sonlight books tend to hook skeptical parents, too.)”
  • My Father’s World – From the Website: “My Father’s World is dedicated to raising up generations of families who see the world through God’s eyes and live according to that knowledge. God’s Word is central. Celebrate the world through God’s eyes. So many great ones! I ended up choosing Easy Peasy Allinonehomeschool. After getting overwhelmed with all the curriculum, I realized my style was very “unschooling”. I teach as we go and we rarely learn through sit-down paperwork but through books or play. I love EasyPeasy because 1. it’s free and 2. it helps to keep me on track with subjects. There’s definitely a lot more to it than I use it for, but I think it’s a GREAT starter curriculum if you don’t have the money to pay for something and/or you want to learn how to homeschool without buying a bunch of curriculum. It also doesn’t hurt to look into it and start with it and then choose something paid for along the way. Overall I think it’s a great website if you are starting out!
